"Work! Walk through every open door; be ready in season and out of season as if everything depended on your labor. This is one of the great secrets in connection with successful service for Him – work as if everything depended on your diligence, but trust in the blessing of the Father to bring success." This is a quote from George Muller's diary, a dedicated man of faith who served thousands of orphans throughout his lifetime. He left a legacy that has inspired many people, particularly the way he trusted and talked to his Father. This particular quote of his struck me to the core. When I first started reading through it, I was fully on board. "Yes! I can do that, I can work hard and put all my effort into HS." But as I got to the second part, the part where George told me to work hard AND THEN only trust in the Father to bring success... I felt the conviction sink deep down inside of me. Trust Him to bring success? Can I do that? Trusting Him has been the name of the game for me these past few months. And I've found I'm not very good at it. I tend to rely on my own efforts and hard work to get things done, and it isn't til after I've worried and hemmed and hawed that I remember to bring it to Him. Even when I do remember, it's hard to let that worry go! I like to be the girl with a plan. I like strategies. I like methods (even when they look more like madness). In theory I would like to be the girl who trusts her Dad, but I struggle most with that part. "Can't you just tell me what's going to happen?" I ask that one A LOT. This one too: "I know you want 'such-and-such' to happen, but when?"
Work hard and trust Him. More like work hard to trust Him. As the timeline for HS moves forward, fundraising progresses, and our kids keep waiting for us to return to them, I strive to take George's advice. It helps to look back on all the blessings that we have received from our Father thus far, his faithfulness in every step. If those are any indication of the future success He will bring for us, count me in.
